Kiskunmajsa is a small town with 11.000 inhabitants in south-hungary. The public library provides information for the citizens. The library owns 47.000 documents, which can be borrowed. We see it as our mission to assist the education and to improve the quality of life trough our documents. The library also offers leisure activities. The library owns a selection of books for children and teenagers. We also have technikal literature and books for adults. Beside books you can borrow daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, CDs, videos, DVDs, and audio books, too. You can find a lot of information about the European Union as well. About 800 children, 200 teenagers and 400 adults are visiting the library every year.
6 librarians and one assistant are working in the library. The persons, especially being involved in children and youthwork, have pedagogical university education. The employees have computer knowledge and are abel to help the visitors with computer and internet usage. Seven computers with Internet acess and a printer are availeable. Several times per week the library offers activitys for groups such as for schoolclasses and kindergarten groups. There are arrangements for adults to, like an author reading from his or her new book. The library as well offers the posibility to send or receieve faxes and to copy. One of our staff speaks basic English, basic French, and two have basic to good German knowledge.
In our town there lives a small part of Romanies (Cigányok), too. We try to help them to integrate into the community. In Kiskunmajsa there is a hot springs bath, which attractes lots of tourist during the summer. Some of these tourists visit the library when staying here. The library participates in the European Voluntary Service as a Sending- and Hostorganisation. In 2006 you could find a French volunteer, and 2007/2008 we hosted a German volunteer in our library.
